Iowa GOP convention-goers favor Huckabee as VP link to original source Mike Huckabee was the favorite to be on the Republican ticket as vice president in an informal poll taken at the Iowa Republican Party’s State Convention on Saturday. Huckabee finished easily as the top choice among the several dozen convention attendees polled, with Mitt Romney coming in a distant second. Huckabee’s win in the survey came after delivering a warmly received speech to delegates at Saturday’s convention in Des Moines, six months after he won the state’s GOP caucuses. “He really is a captivating speaker. You listen to him and know he means what he is saying and is passionate in his conviction,” Sheila Bright said. “Plus, you look at how he energizes these young people and can’t help but be sure that he would be an asset to McCain in getting the youth vote in November.” Many of those who listed Huckabee at the top of their list to fill the VP spot said they liked him for the job for many of the same reasons they supported him in the January caucuses. “His commitment to personal and public morality is moving,” Becky Hemphill said. “You can really tell that he is a man of faith. As far as politics go, he is right on everything from illegal immigrants to the flat tax.” Mitt Romney was praised for his business savvy and embodiment of strong family values. “He has a good economic sense that leads me to believe he would be a good adviser to McCain on matters of the economy,” Connie Schmedt said. “Plus he’s just a class act kind of guy. He is good to his family and we need that kind of example in our elected officials.” Also mentioned as possibilities for vice president were Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, Florida Gov. Charlie Crist, Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal, and U.S. Rep. Ron Paul. Huckabee in talks for Fox News TV Show link to original source Less than one month after signing on as a Fox News commentator, Mike Huckabee is working aggressively to expand his media presence. This week, Huckabee is meeting with Fox officials about plans to host his own show on the network. Plus, he’s subbing for Paul Harvey on ABC Radio Network and appearing on a number of existing Fox shows. A former Arkansas governor who upended the Republican presidential race with his upset victory in the Iowa caucuses, Huckabee continued campaigning for the nomination after it became mathematically impossible for him to catch John McCain in the delegate race. That prompted speculation that Huckabee was more interested in boosting his profile than in a future in politics, though his name is still bandied about as a possible running mate for McCain. Huckabee, an ordained Baptist minister, worked in local radio as a teenager. And, on the campaign trail, he won raves for his quick wit and folksy delivery. After an appearance as a political analyst on one of MSNBC’s election-night broadcasts, Huckabee last month inked a one-year deal with Fox to provide commentary on a variety of the networks shows. A source with knowledge of Huckabee’s contract said it included tentative plans for him to host his own show. Fox declined to comment about plans for the show, while a Huckabee advisor did not immediately have information about the discussions. But, in a Monday e-mail, Huckabee told supporters he’s looking to expand his media footprint on Fox and elsewhere. “I’m in New York for a few days to meet with Fox News officials and discuss a show I would host, as well as appear on numerous Fox programs in the next few days,” reads his email. “On Tuesday and Wednesday, a really special opportunity for me — I’ll be subbing for the legendary and immortal Paul Harvey on the ABC Radio Network.” Huckabee called the Harvey gig “truly a special honor” and asked his supporters to pray for him to have “clarity when substituting for Paul Harvey” as well as “wisdom in being on shows like Hannity and Colmes and O’Reilly.” Cable news networks have expanded their political coverage in response to intense viewer interest in the 2008 presidential campaign. And in recent months, Fox has inked a number of big political names to provide analysis, from former Bush political guruKarl Rove to Howard Wolfson, the top spokesman for New York Sen. Hillary Clinton’s bid for the Democratic nomination. Huckabee also has started a political action committee to raise money for Republicans who support “tax reform, a strong national defense, real border security, life, the family, less government, and individual liberty.” In his e-mail, he asked for donations to the PAC and also indicated he plans to leave Thursday for a week-long trip to Rwanda with McCain’s wife, Cindy, as well as former Sens. Bill Frist, a Tennessee Republican, and Tom Daschle, a South Dakota Democrat who is co-chairman for the campaign of Illinois Sen. Barack Obama. Video: Mike on Fox and Friends Part I
Part II PartIII Huckabee in Iowa link to original source The Republican who won January's Iowa Caucuses returned to the state this weekend to thank his supporters, tout his upcoming book, and put in a plug for John McCain -- the GOP's presumed presidential nominee. Former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee was the keynote speaker at the Iowa Republican Party's state convention. "I am not insincere when I tell you it is great to be back in Iowa. I am so grateful for the opportunity to be here today," Huckabee began. "I have a book coming out in November that will talk about some of the experiences of the campaign. You will be happy to know the very first chapter is titled: I love Iowa." Huckabee began his argument for McCain's candidacy by noting the historic nature of Barack Obama's rise to be the presidential nominee for Democrats. "While I salute Senator Obama for his remarkable journey and believe that the journey itself has been good for this country, I would be the first to tell you he has gone far enough," Huckabee said. "And it has nothing to do with his color. It has to do with the convictions that he would bring to the highest office in the land." As for the second-highest office in the land, during an interview with Radio Iowa Huckabee seemed to suggest he's not interested in going so far as to be McCain's running mate. "I don't expect to be asked. I really don't. I mean, it's pretty obvious if you look at what I'm doing -- you know I'm not sitting around waiting on the phone to ring. Right now it would really mess up a whole lot of things I have going," Huckabee said, with a laugh. "So I'm clearly not living with any expectation that this is going to happen for me." Huckabee said his record had been thoroughly reviewed by reporters who covered his presidential campaign -- and the McCain campaign has not asked him for the kind of personal background materials normally requested when someone's being considered for the vice presidential slot. "If a person has been a candidate they have already been scrutinized," Huckabee said. "Most everything that somebody would want or need to know is in some public record somewhere." During his conversation with Radio Iowa, Huckabee suggested Republicans need to "get moving" and show more enthusiasm for McCain. "While you know a lot of people here would say, 'Well, gee, McCain isn't my first choice,' he's not my first choice either. I was my first choice, but I'm not on the ballot," Huckabee said. "There's two people going to be on the ballot this year and one of them is a clear choice over the other one for me." click here to listen to Huckabee's speech Video: Huckabee discusses planned trip to Rwanda One of many reasons I can't vote for McCain by Burt Noyes The chart below shows the
global temperature trend for the last 20
years. This is not just for the U.S. or the Arctic Circle, but
for the entire earth from the surface to 8 miles altitude. Clearly, human activity and the use of carbon-emitting fossil fuels is not contributing to global warming, since we put increasing amounts of carbon into the atmosphere each year and the temperature trend is definitely downward since the peak of 1997. The Mt. Pinatubo eruption in June of 1991 demonstrates the natural forces control our climate, not man. McCain is a fool to pander to the Marxist environmentalists who would curb our energy use and subsequent economic growth through the 'cap-and-trade' legislation for a few votes. The goal of these left-wing extremists is to bring America to it's knees and allow international bodies like the UN to exert more control over our country through worldwide policing of energy usage and carbon emissions. We already have had encroachments on our personal liberty and freedoms with the recent nationwide law that will ban incandescent light bulbs by 2014. A McCain presidency will marginalize the conservative movement and push our country even further along the road to fascism. ![]() click here to view larger chart Mike Huckabee, Cindy McCain to travel to Rwanda link to original source Cindy McCain and Mike Huckabee are among a bipartisan group headed to Rwanda next week to see how U.S. investments have helped some of the world's poorest people and what steps the next president can take to fight global poverty. Former Senate Majority Leaders Tom Daschle, D-S.D., and Bill Frist, R-Tenn., will lead the delegation for the ONE campaign, an organization that uses grass-roots efforts to pressure world leaders to address poverty and preventable diseases. Cindy McCain is the wife of Republican presidential candidate John McCain, and Huckabee is a former Arkansas governor who challenged McCain during the GOP presidential primaries. The two will join John Podesta and Leon Panetta, both of whom served former President Clinton as chief of staff. Former Rep. John Kasich, R-Ohio, will also make the trip, which is planned for July 17-23. The ONE campaign announced the trip Wednesday. The organization says it will not endorse a candidate for president. 15 things you should know about "The Race" by Michell Malkin link to original source Only in America could critics of a group called "The Race" be labeled racists. Such is the triumph of left-wing identity chauvinists, whose aggressive activists and supine abettors have succeeded in redefining all opposition as "hate." Both Barack Obama and John McCain will speak this week in San Diego at the annual conference of the National Council of La Raza, the Latino organization whose name is Spanish for, yes, "The Race." Can you imagine Obama and McCain paying homage to a group of white people who called themselves that? No matter. The presidential candidates and the media have legitimized "The Race" as a mainstream ethnic lobbying group and marginalized its critics as intolerant bigots. The unvarnished truth is that the group is a radical ethnic nationalist outfit that abuses your tax dollars and milks PC politics to undermine our sovereignty. Here are 15 things you should know about "The Race": 15. "The Race" supports driver's licenses for illegal aliens. 14."The Race" demands in-state tuition discounts for illegal alien students that are not available to law-abiding U.S. citizens and law-abiding legal immigrants. 13. "The Race" vehemently opposes cooperative immigration enforcement efforts between local, state and federal authorities. 12. "The Race" opposes a secure fence on the southern border. 11. "The Race" joined the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee in a failed lawsuit attempt to prevent the feds from entering immigration information into a key national crime database -- and to prevent local police officers from accessing the data. 10. "The Race" opposed the state of Oklahoma's tough immigration-enforcement-first laws, which cut off welfare to illegal aliens, put teeth in employer sanctions and strengthened local-federal cooperation and information sharing. 9. "The Race" joined other open-borders, anti-assimilationists and sued to prevent Proposition 227, California's bilingual education reform ballot initiative, from becoming law. 8. "The Race" bitterly protested common-sense voter ID provisions as an "absolute disgrace." 7. "The Race" has consistently opposed post-9/11 national security measures at every turn. 6. Former "Race" president Raul Yzaguirre, Hillary Clinton's Hispanic outreach adviser, said this: "U.S. English is to Hispanics as the Ku Klux Klan is to blacks." He was referring to U.S. English, the nation's oldest, largest citizens' action group dedicated to preserving the unifying role of the English language in the United States. "The Race" also pioneered Orwellian open-borders Newspeak and advised the Mexican government on how to lobby for illegal alien amnesty while avoiding the terms "illegal" and "amnesty." 5. "The Race" gives mainstream cover to a poisonous subset of ideological satellites, led by Movimiento Estudiantil Chicano de Aztlan, or Chicano Student Movement of Aztlan (MEChA). The late GOP Rep. Charlie Norwood rightly characterized the organization as "a radical racist group ... one of the most anti-American groups in the country, which has permeated U.S. campuses since the 1960s, and continues its push to carve a racist nation out of the American West." 4. "The Race" is currently leading a smear campaign against staunch immigration enforcement leaders and has called for TV and cable news networks to keep immigration enforcement proponents off the airwaves -- in addition to pushing for Fairness Doctrine policies to shut up their foes. The New York Times reported that current "Race" president Janet Murguia believes "hate speech" should "not be tolerated, even if such censorship were a violation of First Amendment rights." 3. "The Race" sponsors militant ethnic nationalist charter schools subsidized by your public tax dollars (at least $8 million in federal education grants). The schools include Aztlan Academy in Tucson, Ariz., the Mexicayotl Academy in Nogales, Ariz., Academia Cesar Chavez Charter School in St. Paul, Minn., and La Academia Semillas del Pueblo in Los Angeles, whose principal inveighed: "We don't want to drink from a White water fountain, we have our own wells and our natural reservoirs and our way of collecting rain in our aqueducts. We don't need a White water fountain ... ultimately the White way, the American way, the neo liberal, capitalist way of life will eventually lead to our own destruction." 2. "The Race" has perfected the art of the PC shakedown at taxpayer expense, pushing relentlessly to lower home loan standards for Hispanic borrowers, reaping millions in federal "mortgage counseling" grants, seeking special multimillion-dollar earmarks and partnering with banks that do business with illegal aliens. 1. "The Race" thrives on ethnic supremacy -- and the elite sheeple's unwillingness to call it what it is. As historian Victor Davis Hanson observes: "[The] organization's very nomenclature 'The National Council of La Raza' is hate speech to the core. Despite all the contortions of the group, Raza (as its Latin cognate suggests) reflects the meaning of 'race' in Spanish, not 'the people' -- and that's precisely why we don't hear of something like 'The National Council of the People,' which would not confer the buzz notion of ethnic, racial and tribal chauvinism." The fringe is the center. The center is the fringe. Viva La Raza. How gun control lost by Steve Chapman link to original source Thomas Jefferson once wrote, pessimistically, "The natural progress of things is for liberty to yield and government to gain ground." He would probably not have been surprised to see the proliferation of gun control laws in our time. But he might not have anticipated that the water would run back uphill. Thursday's Supreme Court decision affirming that the Second Amendment recognizes an individual right to own firearms for self-defense was a vindication of those who have long argued that position. But it was an even more stunning defeat for advocates of gun control, who not so long ago seemed to have history, law and public sympathy on their side. Back then, they couldn't have dreamed that the Supreme Court would say, "You know what? The National Rifle Association is right." In the 1980s and 1990s, as violence raged at epidemic levels, the preferred remedy of policymakers was to restrict the manufacture, sale and ownership of firearms. Washington, D.C. had banned handguns in 1976, and in 1982, Chicago did likewise, prompting several of its suburbs to follow suit. New York required anyone who wanted a handgun to acquire a special permit, which was expensive and hard to get. Meanwhile, the federal government and several states outlawed "assault weapons" -- semiautomatic guns with a military appearance. It looked as though ever-stricter gun control was the wave of the future. But the future had different ideas. What happened? Three main things: --Gun control didn't work. In the 1990s, despite its draconian ban, Washington became the murder capital of the United States. Chicago's homicide rate, which had been declining in the years before it banned handguns, climbed over the following decade. Gun control didn't work. During the time the federal assault weapons law was in effect, the number of gun murders declined -- but so did murders involving knives and other weapons. When the law was allowed to expire in 2004, something interesting happened to the national murder rate: nothing. --Laws allowing concealed weapons proliferated -- with no ill effects. In 1987, Florida gained national attention -- and notoriety -- by passing a law allowing citizens to get permits to carry concealed handguns. Opponents predicted a wave of carnage by pistol-packing hotheads, but it didn't happen. In fact, murders and other violent crimes subsided. Permit holders proved to be sober and restrained. People elsewhere took heed, and today, according to the NRA, 40 states have "right-to-carry" laws. As those laws have spread, the homicide rate has fallen sharply from the peak reached in 1991. --The Second Amendment got a second look. In 1983, a San Francisco lawyer named Don Kates published an article in the University of Michigan Law Review arguing that, contrary to prevailing wisdom in the judiciary and law schools, the Constitution upholds an individual right to keep and bear arms. Numerous legal scholars, spurred to examine the record, reached the same surprising conclusion. Before long, even some liberal law professors were coming around. In 2000, Harvard's Laurence Tribe published a new edition of his influential constitutional law textbook, asserting that the Second Amendment had an undeniable meaning: "The federal government may not disarm individual citizens without some unusually strong justification consistent with the authority of the states to organize their own militias. That assurance in turn is provided through recognizing a right (admittedly of uncertain scope) on the part of individuals to possess and use firearms in the defense of themselves and their homes…" The majority opinion last week, written by Justice Antonin Scalia, drew heavily on this stack of scholarship to argue that the framers did not limit the right to the context of service in a state militia. Without the stimulus provided by these contrarian thinkers, the decision would never have come to pass. And the Second Amendment would have remained what it was for so long: a curious irrelevancy. Instead, the right to keep and bear arms has finally taken its rightful place with our other fundamental liberties. It may be the natural course of things for government control to expand and freedom to shrink. But as Jefferson knew, America was founded to reverse that process. |
