Mike Huckabee at Missouri Boys State
link to original source

Former Arkansas Governor (and former presidential candidate) Mike Huckabee (r) was the featured speaker at the opening night assembly in Hendricks Hall for the American Legion Boys State of Missouri which is taking place on the campus of the University of Central Missouri in Warrensburg this week.

Huckabee spoke for over forty minutes and took questions for nearly another twenty. The entire lower portion of the hall was filled with Boys State participants, with their overflow and public seating in the balcony (it had been announced earlier that 981 individuals had registered and that there were 125 staff members).

Mike Huckabee is an engaging speaker, liberally lacing his narrative with humorous and sometimes self deprecating anecdotes. He spoke without notes or a prepared text and walked around the stage throughout his speech (he wore a remote microphone).

Huckabee front runner in "VP-poll-ooza"
link to original source

Mike Huckabee is the clear front runner in "VP-poll-ooza." More than 54 percent of readers who responded to the Star's online poll said they preferred the former governor of Arkansas to be the running mate of presumptive Republican presidential nominee Sen. John McCain of Arizona.

On the Democratic side, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York and Gov. Bill Richardson of New Mexico are close contenders for the No. 2 position to presumptive Democratic nominee Sen. Barack Obama of Illinois.

Here are some of the comments we received regarding Huckabee:

● I'm not sure I would vote for McCain if he chooses to ignore the millions of Americans who voted for Mike Huckabee.
● Huckabee with McCain would balance the ticket and would get people excited to get to the polls.
● McCain needs Huckabee. He and McCain are made for each other politically. Both ran civil, issue-focused races. Both are principled men who would rather lose an election than lose the strong principles they believe in.
● Mike Huckabee is a conservative and he is a true pro-life and pro-family candidate who will get the evangelical and grass-roots vote.
● Huckabee brings charisma, intelligence and a vision for America.
● Huckabee has his finger on the pulse. He gets the struggles "real" people are going through.
● Huckabee has experience, character, integrity, honesty, passion and love for nation.
● A good guitar player in a rock band is a good candidate for VP.

Quote of the week:
"It is time we turn the tide in the country away from appeasing the irrational, flawed teaching of the followers of Al Gore. We must take the terrorist supporting countries at their word - that they will destroy the American economy using oil.We must drill and refine our own oil - not for sale to enemy nations - but to fill the gas tank of the housewife driving to the local grocery store or to fuel the big truck that delivers the bread, milk and vegetables she will buy. We are in a war for oil but the battlefield is not Iraq - it is the in the halls of Congress." from article by Mark Taylor

Gingrich, Huckabee rally Republicans in Houston
link to original source

Republicans waited in long lines at the state Republican convention Friday to listen to the man some consider the GOP’s savior.

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich helped usher in an era of conservative leadership in Congress.  But can he bring Republicans to the forefront again?

“He’s a great guy. He’s done a lot of service to this country,” GOP delegate Walker Gaines said.

To win in November, Republicans will need support from minority voters. But in 2006, they didn’t get it.

“We’re working on it. We’re telling the truth, and some of us have never left that mentality,” delegate Beverly Massege said.

In the last national election, GOP House candidates got just 11 percent of the African American vote and 30 percent of the Hispanic vote.

“The Republican party should say to every American, particularly to the poorest Americans, ‘How would you like lower gas prices?’ You go to the poorest neighborhoods in America, and they’re suffering the most,” Gingrich said.

“You know, we have an awful lot of minorities in our party, and the media doesn’t give us the kind of consideration saying that we do,” delegate Sandra Hall said.

Former presidential hopeful Mike Huckabee told the crowd the best way to get votes is to stick to core principals.

“The Republican Party is only strong when it remembers its roots of conservatism and its pro-life family commitment,” Huckabee said.

“We’re trying to do that again, trying to unite the party with John McCain,” Gaines said.

Huckabee recounts life on the edge of familiarity
link to original source

Former presidential candidate Mike Huckabee said he runs into a fair number of people who look at him a little funny, trying to figure out how they know him.

"They're not sure if I ran for president or sold them life insurance last year," he told Republicans gathered at the state convention Friday.

One man was even convinced that Huckabee, a Fort Worth-trained minister turned politician, had worked in his factory.

Once people remember that Huckabee was a presidential candidate -- he bowed out and endorsed John McCain after Texans cast their votes March 4 -- he said they all tell him they voted for him.

"If as many people voted for me as claim so, I'd be the next nominee and president by now," he said.

Huckabee's family

Huckabee said he grew up in a household where his dad worked two jobs to support the family.

"The only soap we had in my house growing up was Lava," he said.

"I was in college before I realized [using soap] isn't supposed to hurt."

He also said his parents, staunch Democrats, had three heroes: "Jesus, Elvis and FDR, and not necessarily in that order."

Huckabee on Tim Russert's death
from HuckPac

I join with other Americans in expressing both shock and grief with the news of Tim Russert’s untimely death. He was a significant figure in American politics, deeply respected, but also deeply feared by those who sat across his table on Meet The Press. He was fair, but always relentless in his pursuit of truth and honesty from those who dared to lead the nation. His has been a commanding voice in public affairs and in many ways the E.F. Hutton of political talk. Our prayers go out to his family and we will all mourn the loss of his voice.

Must-reads for conservatives:
The Supreme Court and terrorists' rights
by Hugh Hewitt   link to original source

Thursday's 5-4 decision awarding "unlawful combatants" at Gitmo --terrorists-- the "privilege of the writ of habeas corpus" has left millions of Americans stunned.  What in the world is the majority of the Supreme Court thinking?  Justice Scalia, writing in dissent, was blunt:

"America is at war with radical Islamists. The enemy began by killing Americans and American allies abroad: 241 at the Marine barracks in Lebanon, 19 at the Khobar Towers in Dhahran, 224 at our embassies in Dar es Salaam and Nairobi, and 17 on the USS Cole in Yemen. See National Commission on Terrorist Attacks upon the United States, The 9/11 Commission Report, pp. 60–61, 70, 190 (2004). On September 11, 2001, the enemy brought the battle to American soil, killing 2,749 at the Twin Towers in New York City, 184 at the Pentagon in Washington, D. C., and 40 in Pennsylvania. See id., at 552, n. 9. It has threatened further attacks against our homeland; one need only walk about buttressed and barricaded Washington, or board a plane anywhere in the country, to know that the threat is a serious one. Our Armed Forces are now in the field against the enemy, in Afghanistan and Iraq. Last week, 13 of our countrymen in arms were killed.

The game of bait-and-switch that today’s opinion plays upon the Nation’s Commander in Chief will make the war harder on us. It will almost certainly cause more Americans to be killed."

These are harsh words, unusually so even for ordinary debate, but amazingly so among the nine.  Justice Scalia is quite obviously as frustrated with his aging colleagues as are the vast majority of Americans.  There’s a war going on.  These terrorists and their still-at-large allies are trying to kill us.  The president and the Congress, including many Democrats, took the blueprint the Court delivered the last time it addressed the matter and passed a statute specifically tailored to the demands the Court’s five justices laid out.  Now that Supreme Court-mandated approach has been struck down, and the “great writ” is open to the worst killers who have ever set their sights on the homeland.

What this means, of course, is more litigation, more delays, and more confusion.  Only one thing is certain: Our terrorist enemies still at large must be amazed, amused and encouraged by the continued insistence by legal elites that they be treated like petty American criminals rather than fanatical killers eager for martyrdom.  It is as though the five justices and their clerks are wholly ignorant of the rising stack of books and flood of articles detailing the nature of the enemy and their creed of death.

What is more alarming than the prospect of ignorance on the part of the majority is their collective seduction by hard left elites, particularly those in the Academy.  Supreme Court justices don’t get out much.  When they do it is typically to the nation’s law schools and to judicial and ABA conferences, where they are no doubt surrounded by thousands of elites who have as much experience with the war as the justices, but are perhaps even less well read on the nature of the jihadists’ ideology and tactics.  Andrew McCarthy’s brilliant new book, Willful Blindness, A Memoir of the Jihad, recounts how unprepared the American legal system was for the assault by the fanatics when it first crashed into the World trade center in 1993 and how even after 9/11 it could not adjust to cope with the war in which we are engulfed.  Obviously the highest rank of our legal elite have not yet come to grip with the nature of the enemy.

We have to pray that Justice Scalia is wrong though common sense tells us he is right.  The majority’s indulgence of the killers’ demand to be treated as ordinary Americans or as aliens journeying through our land is as astonishing as it is dangerous.  By asserting its preeminence over the combination of the president and the Congress, Justice Kennedy and his colleagues have certainly proven they are not at the top of the least dangerous branch.  Far from it, in fact.  The dangers the majority subject us to are all too apparent.

Planned Parenthood's obscene profits
by Michelle Malkin   link to original source

GOP presidential candidate John McCain sounded more like a Democratic presidential candidate (a recurring trend) when he joined the Left's oil industry bashers a few weeks ago. Asked by a North Carolina voter whether he supported a Jimmy Carter-era windfall profits tax, McCain responded: "Um, I don't like obscene profits being made anywhere -- and I'd be glad to look not just at the windfall profits tax -- that's not what bothers me -- but we should look at any incentives that we are giving to people or industries or corporations that are distorting the market."

Here's an idea for all the hand-wringing GOP strategists in Washington wondering what it will take to win back disgusted economic and social conservatives: How about a Republican presidential candidate who will talk about the tax-subsidized abortion industry the way McCain talks about the oil industry?

In April, the annual report for Planned Parenthood Federation of America revealed that the abortion giant had a total income of $1.02 billion -- with reported profits of nearly $115 million. Taxpayers kick in more than $336 million worth of government grants and contracts at both the state and federal levels. That's a third of Planned Parenthood's budget.

And what market-distorting results do we get for those government incentives? In 2006 alone: 289,750 abortions.

Oil execs, tobacco execs, banking execs, pharmaceutical company execs and baseball players have all been hauled up before Congress for highly publicized whippings by crusading lawmakers. But the executives of Planned Parenthood have escaped government scrutiny and public accountability for their predatory behavior, dangerous medical practices, deception and deadly windfall.

In Washington, D.C., the family of 13-year-old Shantese Butler filed a $50 million suit against Planned Parenthood after a botched abortion left the girl permanently injured and infertile. Students for Life of America reports that Shantese was left with "severe abdominal bleeding, severe vaginal injury, severe injury to the cervix, significant uterine perforation and a small bowel tear." In addition, parts of the unborn child were found inside Shantese's abdomen.

In Nebraska, Planned Parenthood refused to disclose the terms of a settlement with another victim whose botched abortion resulted in a perforated uterus, massive blood loss, an emergency hysterectomy, permanent infertility, seizures, and lifelong pain and suffering. According to the suit obtained by Life News, the woman instructed the abortionist and his assistants to stop, but was told: "We can't stop." The Planned Parenthood employees held her down to complete the procedure.

Where's the subpoena-wielding Henry Waxman? Can Orrin Hatch spare a moment from investigating the New England Patriots to probe Planned Parenthood's efforts to advise underage teens on how to circumvent parental notification laws to secretly obtain RU-486, the abortion drug cocktail? Where is the concern for the women and children who were mistreated by Planned Parenthood clinics in Kansas, where Johnson County District Attorney Phill Kline has filed a 107-count criminal complaint against the abortion racket, with charges ranging from falsifying documents to performing illegal late-term abortions?

And where are Nancy Pelosi and the For The Children brigade to investigate the shocking evidence of Planned Parenthood's nefariousness exposed by undercover student journalist Lila Rose?

Last year, Rose caught a Planned Parenthood official encouraging a female minor to evade statutory rape laws in order to obtain an abortion in California. In February, Rose released undercover tapes of her discussion with an Idaho Planned Parenthood official eager to accept money from a racist donor who wanted his funds earmarked for aborting black babies. In April, she released video of clinic officials in New Mexico and Oklahoma willing to take money from a blatantly racist donor. One Planned Parenthood staffer admits that "for whatever reason, we'll accept the money."

For whatever reason, Washington has turned a blind bipartisan eye to this bloody, government-funded business -- and pro-life, limited-government conservatives in the Beltway have gone along with subsidizing it. "Obscene profits," indeed.

Why sex is not equal to race
by Kevin McCullough  link to original source

The sexual behavior that one chooses to engage in, will never be equal to the status of a person's race. Confusing these two truly different concepts is dishonest. And those who claim otherwise do so for manipulated outcome to redesign society.

Normal people have understood this since the beginning of time.

The activist California Supreme Court does not. In the court's recent ruling pertaining to the mandated attempt to redefine marriage - and to tyrannically force that redefinition upon the voters of California - four judges raised the choice of sexual desire, inclination, and behavior to the same level of class status as racial ethnicity.

In doing so they set themselves up for more problems than they can envision because of such a leap of logic, lack of scientific evidence, and the general willingness to override the votes of 63% of the Californian population. These four judges have equated, in the eyes of the law, the choice of who one chooses to bed as being equal to what color of skin a person is born with. In doing so they have now laid down future arguments for further redefinition of marriage to include nearly any sexual union in both number and combination that a person can imagine. By redefining marriage, but then limiting that redefined definition to only include "pairs" of persons, the court has opened itself to claims of discrimination from bi-sexual persons who may very easily wish to be in a legal sexual "relationship" that includes a person of both genders, not to mention heterosexual polygamists. Each of the groups, who choose sexual partners for whatever reasons they do - will be liable to claim that the State of California must end discrimination against additional "alternative" lifestyles, and extend a yet still more redefined view of "marriage" to them as well.

Yet it is simple to understand why the judges are so wrong.

Romantic actions, such as flirting, hitting on someone, soliciting a phone number, and being bashful in asking someone on a "date" are all volitional acts of conscience and of choice. Consensual sexual actions from simple hand-holding, to kissing, following all the way through the act of sexual consummation are again choice based. Choosing to act on those urges - defines the individual's sexual orientation. With large numbers of people even now championing the fact that they've chosen the choice they currently are involved with, sexual identity, practice, and enthusiasm have become increasingly fluid.

Pop culture tells us so. Consider the number two song in the country this week: Katy Parry's "I Kissed a Girl!"

I kissed a girl and I liked it
The taste of her cherry chapstick
I kissed a girl just to try it
I hope my boyfriend don't mind it
It felt so wrong
It felt so right
Don't mean I'm in love tonight
I kissed a girl and I liked it
I liked it

The weekend's biggest movie Sex And The City is reinforcing this belief with a closing monologue from the film's main character Carrie Bradshaw: "It's not in the label of being husband/wife, bride and groom, or man and woman that's important... it's getting beyond the labels and seeing the person..."

Yet that is in essence the problem. We humans aren't mere collections of DNA, water, plasma, and bone. We are not in essence biologically "the same." Men and women serve distinct purposes, functions, and roles in the furtherance of society.

A woman who is African American, can no more be a white woman the next day regardless of how much she wished to (if she even would). Likewise a Latino man could not go to bed one night at 5'8" and wake up the next morning to find he was black, 7'2'', and the starting center for his local NBA franchise. Race and other truly genetic based parts of life - skin color, height, shape and forms of features are pieces of ourselves that only God Himself had the choice in determining.

Who we romance, date, move in with, and have sex with - is something He's left to our free will as a matter of choice.

The truth of the matter is we as humans have always had a natural urge to resist what is best for ourselves. The activists that argue for the redefining of marriage know this full well. But they love the pursuit of the perceived "forbidden" even more so. Over time, mere participation in private sexual matters does not satisfy and thus they have become more brazen in their attempt to radically change the face of human society. Their attempt is to make those who view non-traditional sexual arrangements as abnormal, the activists hope to force them to feel isolated, punished, and eventually silenced.

Yet one overwhelming fact stares them in the face at every turn. God designed it so that only the sexual union of a man and a woman can create a life - and therefore extend society and civilization.

If a black man and a white woman conceive a child - it will likely have a skin tone that mixes the look and characteristics of both racial make-ups. But two people of the same gender - through sexual expression - do not create a hybrid of what their two sets of genetic DNA consists of. Sexual orgasm by two people of the same gender - in fact - produces nothing.

Race is external, determined by an authority beyond humanity, and leaves the person no choice in adjusting it's existence, impact, or results in their life.

Romantic pursuit, formulation of relationships, and engagement of sexual activity are determined completely by the actions, choice, and decisions of the persons involved.

Make no mistake, many a hard working black man has been overlooked for a promotion that he fully deserved - because of his skin color. Yet no one should be able to even ascertain the bedroom habits of one's co-workers except for yet one more choice - the decision to talk about it.

Racial discrimination costs the households of people of color thousands of dollars per year. Those who form non-traditional "romantic" attachments, and engage in non-traditional sexual practices have nearly three times the amount of expendable income on average than the normal husband/wife household.

Ultimately the citizens of California are smarter than the four arrogant black robes who sought to push an agenda down the throats of the voters. Californians are able to assess that who a person calls on the phone, takes on a "date," or invites into their bedroom - has never been, nor will ever be close to equal to the color of a man's skin.

And as such - it is increasingly apparent that rights, status, and standing should not be given special consideration over those elements of our lives we can control.
