Huckabee: "I got to give Hillary some credit"
link to original source

Former campaign underdog Mike Huckabee said Thursday that Democrat Hillary Clinton should ignore critics pressuring her to end her presidential run, telling CNN’s John Roberts that “she entered this thing to play to the finish line.”

“It’s easy to play horse race with this and say, ‘Gosh, she ought to drop out,’” he said on CNN’s American Morning. “She’s playing by the rules that the party set, just as I played by the rules that the Republican Party set.

“You know it’s frustrating to those of us who spend all of this time, effort and money — we get our supporters out there, we play by the rules that were handed and then somebody says, ‘It looks like the way this is gonna end is different than we want, so why don’t you go ahead and quit?’”

Huckabee faced pressure to end his own White House bid after it became mathematically impossible for him to become the Republican nominee. He stayed in the race several weeks longer, winning several contests, until John McCain captured the 1,191 delegates required to claim the GOP nomination.

On Thursday, Huckabee – who endorsed McCain, and recently launched his own political action committee – said public calls for an end to the Democratic contest were premature. “Now what if you did that in major league baseball, what if we did that in NFL football, once a team has got four or five touchdowns ahead we just said, ‘Look, it’s pretty inevitable here, the math doesn’t work, let’s end the game, so is that the way we ought to play it?’

“I got to give Hillary some credit that: yeah, it doesn’t look like she’s gonna get the nomination. But she entered this thing to play to the finish line — and I think that’s what she’s attempting to do.”

Huckabee on Hillary: "I feel her pain"
link to original source

As someone who faced criticism himself for not exiting his presidential nominating race "properly," former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee suffered through some of the same criticisms Sen. Hillary Clinton is going through right now. (Though of course the math was even more stark for him.)

So this morning I asked Huckabee what he thought of Clinton's dilemma.

"In the words of her husband, 'I feel her pain!'" Huckabee says.

"She is playing by the rules.  She didn’t make the rules, the party did," he continues. "If they wanted to have the game end before the end or regulation, they should have written the rules that way.  Does Major League baseball or the NFL prematurely end the game if one team gets overwhelmingly ahead?  Even in boxing, unless there is a knockout, the fight goes the distance.

"The idea this 'hurts' the Democrats is not absolute.  It hurts them if things get rancorous and personal (which it has).  But the mere fact of the ongoing race doesn't automatically hurt.  In fact, the Dems are on page 1 everyday and John McCain is on page 7.

"True, he's not really taking any body blows right now, but there is some value in being battle tested.

"There is one thing that has to be noted, however:  As long as the only people calling for her to get out was Obama supporters it wasn’t a big deal.  Now, she's beginning to see the defection of long time loyalists like McGovern and that hurts.  If that continues, she may not have a choice if she wants to 'leave the party so as to get a return invitation.'"

Post-campaign Huckabee gains from his other loss
link to original source

Four short months ago, Mike Huckabee was on top of the political world after winning the hearts and minds of Iowa Republicans in his dark-horse presidential bid. Yesterday, he was holding forth to a smallish corporate confab about diabetes prevention with va-voomy "Access Hollywood" correspondent Maria Menounos.

Dude has totally traded up.

Deep down, every politician must secretly love that moment when he can leave the grueling campaign trail and start collecting those sweet speaker's fees. (Ask Bill Clinton!) It helps if the topic is one that the pol is truly energized by -- and a diabetes diagnosis was the nudge for Huckabee's legendary 110-pound weight loss a couple of years ago. Plus, the man's a great storyteller. So his appearance at the Newseum, on behalf of pharmaceutical giant Novo Nordisk, was like an outtake from a really inspiring episode of "The Biggest Loser."

"If anybody ever existed as the poster child for unhealthy living, it would have been me," Huckabee told the press briefing.

He explained how Southerners adopted fried foods out of "economic necessity." But as a kid, "I thought we ate fried foods because we were lucky, not because we were broke!" He never exercised: "I used to see people out running, and I'd think . . . 'They're going to get hit by a car. What's healthy about getting hit by a car?' "

As the super-size governor of Arkansas, he dreaded scaling the statehouse stairs to face reporters: Winded from the climb, he looked "like Mike Wallace had just chased me down the alley for an ambush for '60 Minutes.' "

Good stuff! Can we just get this guy his own talk show already?

The staunch conservative gave props to Ralph Nader for his seat-belt campaign, saying a similar public-education effort will be needed to fight obesity. Once, he said, mandatory seat-belt laws seemed like a crazy idea; now almost every state has one, "except New Hampshire." Ahem. "If I had carried that state, I would have never mentioned New Hampshire."

Huckabee, Arkansas Dems agree Clinton should fight on
link to original source

Calls for Sen. Hillary Clinton to end her White House bid sounded plenty familiar to Mike Huckabee on Wednesday.

"I know what it's like to hear that from a lot of people," said Huckabee, who fought off pressure to drop out of the race for the Republican presidential nomination earlier this year.

"When her supporters are ready for her to quit, they'll tell her, but she owes it to them to give them the best fight she's got," the former Arkansas governor said. "As long as she and they think there's a remote possibility she can win it, I think she has every right to stay in it."

In Washington to speak to a health-care conference on Wednesday, Huckabee said Clinton's chances are "getting more remote every day."

Republicans would rejoice over any scenario that gives Clinton the nomination, Huckabee said, because that would signal strife within the Democratic party.

"We would be celebrating," Huckabee said. "All of us would qualify to be on 'Dancing with the Stars,' without lessons."

Huckabee commented the day after Clinton decisively lost North Carolina's presidential primary and won Indiana, but only by a narrow margin.

Clinton vowed Wednesday to remain in the race despite growing evidence that Sen. Barack Obama has all but wrapped up the Democratic nomination. Some Democrats and analysts have demanded she step aside.

Sen. Blanche Lincoln, D-Ark., defended her party and its protracted presidential race. She said Democrats will hopefully coalesce in support of one candidate by next month.

"At the end of June, hopefully, we're going to bind our wounds and come together and be one," said Lincoln, who with other Democrats in the Arkansas congressional delegation hosted a fundraiser for Clinton on Wednesday evening.

The situations faced by the two former residents of the Arkansas Governor's Mansion are significantly different.

Unlike with Huckabee in February, Clinton still has a chance at the nomination. Unpledged superdelegates - party leaders and officials who vote at the convention - could see her as more electable than Obama and swing her way. Or Democrats could accept delegates from Florida and Michigan, both states won by Clinton.

Those states had been stripped of their convention delegates as punishment for setting their primaries earlier than party rules allowed.

Huckabee was mathematically out of contention for the GOP nod for weeks before he left the race. He even spoofed his predicament on "Saturday Night Live."

Huckabee said the calls to end his bid came from opponents, and Clinton is hearing the same type of criticism now.

No Democrat in the state delegation said Clinton should give up.

The group hosted its $500-per-person "dessert reception" fundraiser with the former Arkansas first lady at a stately Washington hotel.

"I would tell her just to keep going at it just as hard as she can," said Rep. Marion Berry, D-Gillett.

"I think it would be unplugging the system before we're through," Berry said. "We're just in, I think, the last quarter of this primary."

The Democratic nomination remains up for grabs as long as the Florida and Michigan issue remains unsettled, said Sen. Mark Pryor, D-Ark.

"I don't know how that gets resolved, but I think before you can really make a final determination on the nominee here, you need to make sure Florida and Michigan are treated fairly in the process," Pryor said.

Huckabee warns of diabetes threat
link to original source

An advocate for better health since his diabetes diagnosis five years ago, Mike Huckabee warned Wednesday that the illness may pose a greater threat than terrorism to the United States.

Nearly 59 million Americans are at risk for type 2 diabetes. The former Arkansas governor said the epidemic would be "the lead story" across the country if tens of millions were in danger of terrorist attacks.

"The greatest challenge to America may not be something from without, it may be something from within," Huckabee said. "It's our own unhealthy habits."

Huckabee, who made an unsuccessful run for the Republican presidential nomination this year, was the keynote speaker at a conference on diabetes.

Approximately two-thirds of Americans are overweight, a major diabetes risk factor. According to a Gallup survey released Wednesday, 24 percent of adults have been diagnosed with diabetes or are at risk for the disease.

Huckabee often has recalled when his physician told him in 2003 he would not live through a decade unless he changed his unhealthy lifestyle.

He shed 110 pounds through diet and exercise and wrote a book about his experience, "Quit Digging Your Grave with a Knife and Fork."

With 80 percent of American health-care costs tied to treatment of chronic diseases, Huckabee has said disease prevention is a cure for the nation's health-care crisis.

"It's our lifestyle that's killing us," he said, calling diabetes "one of the single greatest threats to the health of America."

The health-care company Novo Nordisk sponsored Wednesday's forum and the "National Changing Diabetes Program."

The major initiative of the program is a goal for the 45 percent of Americans at risk for type 2 diabetes to know their blood glucose levels by 2015.

Just 17 percent of Americans know blood glucose levels now. The level is an indicator for diabetes risk, much like a cholesterol screening is for heart problems.

Huckabee said Americans can improve their health and avoid diabetes by making better food choices.

Even in tough economic times, healthy choices are realistic, he said.

"Part of the challenge is helping people to learn how to make healthy choices on a budget: Buying things in season and putting it up, or buying in quantity," he said.

He touted an idea he floated to the U.S. Department of Agriculture while he was governor. It would leverage the value of food stamps based on the nutritional content of food.

Food stamps worth $1 would give consumers $1.25 in buying power if the vouchers were used on healthy foods like fruits and vegetables. A $1 voucher would decrease in value to 75 cents for foods with little nutritional value.

"I never could get anybody to go along with it," Huckabee said, blaming the lack of USDA interest on government red tape.

Huckabee's relationship with Novo Nordisk drew criticism earlier this year. The pharmaceutical company conducts stem cell research while Huckabee opposes the practice.

Novo Nordisk paid Huckabee $35,000 for two speeches in 2007, and the company bought up 35,000 copies of his weight-loss book.

Environmentalists' wild predictions
by Walter Williams   link to original source

Now that another Earth Day has come and gone, let's look at some environmentalist predictions that they would prefer we forget.

At the first Earth Day celebration, in 1969, environmentalist Nigel Calder warned, "The threat of a new ice age must now stand alongside nuclear war as a likely source of wholesale death and misery for mankind." C.C. Wallen of the World Meteorological Organization said, "The cooling since 1940 has been large enough and consistent enough that it will not soon be reversed." In 1968, Professor Paul Ehrlich, Vice President Gore's hero and mentor, predicted there would be a major food shortage in the U.S. and "in the 1970s ... hundreds of millions of people are going to starve to death." Ehrlich forecasted that 65 million Americans would die of starvation between 1980 and 1989, and by 1999 the U.S. population would have declined to 22.6 million. Ehrlich's predictions about England were gloomier: "If I were a gambler, I would take even money that England will not exist in the year 2000."

In 1972, a report was written for the Club of Rome warning the world would run out of gold by 1981, mercury and silver by 1985, tin by 1987 and petroleum, copper, lead and natural gas by 1992. Gordon Taylor, in his 1970 book "The Doomsday Book," said Americans were using 50 percent of the world's resources and "by 2000 they [Americans] will, if permitted, be using all of them." In 1975, the Environmental Fund took out full-page ads warning, "The World as we know it will likely be ruined by the year 2000."

Harvard University biologist George Wald in 1970 warned, "... civilization will end within 15 or 30 years unless immediate action is taken against problems facing mankind." That was the same year that Sen. Gaylord Nelson warned, in Look Magazine, that by 1995 "... somewhere between 75 and 85 percent of all the species of living animals will be extinct."

It's not just latter-day doomsayers who have been wrong; doomsayers have always been wrong. In 1885, the U.S. Geological Survey announced there was "little or no chance" of oil being discovered in California, and a few years later they said the same about Kansas and Texas. In 1939, the U.S. Department of the Interior said American oil supplies would last only another 13 years. In 1949, the Secretary of the Interior said the end of U.S. oil supplies was in sight. Having learned nothing from its earlier erroneous claims, in 1974 the U.S. Geological Survey advised us that the U.S. had only a 10-year supply of natural gas. The fact of the matter, according to the American Gas Association, there's a 1,000 to 2,500 year supply.

Here are my questions: In 1970, when environmentalists were making predictions of manmade global cooling and the threat of an ice age and millions of Americans starving to death, what kind of government policy should we have undertaken to prevent such a calamity? When Ehrlich predicted that England would not exist in the year 2000, what steps should the British Parliament have taken in 1970 to prevent such a dire outcome? In 1939, when the U.S. Department of the Interior warned that we only had oil supplies for another 13 years, what actions should President Roosevelt have taken? Finally, what makes us think that environmental alarmism is any more correct now that they have switched their tune to manmade global warming?

Here are a few facts: Over 95 percent of the greenhouse effect is the result of water vapor in Earth's atmosphere. Without the greenhouse effect, Earth's average temperature would be zero degrees Fahrenheit. Most climate change is a result of the orbital eccentricities of Earth and variations in the sun's output. On top of that, natural wetlands produce more greenhouse gas contributions annually than all human sources combined.

Obama's friend Bill Ayers stepping on American flag:

Caution: You are about to enter a gun-free zone
by Mike Adams  link to original source

I don’t have to remind my readers that I spend a good bit of my time disagreeing with campus leftists. Nor do I need to remind them that most of these disagreements are with leftist professors. But, until now, I haven’t written about one of the subjects upon which we frequently disagree. That is the subject of whether deterrence theory “works.”

Conservatives and leftists (I have a hard time calling them liberals because of their fascistic tendencies) have a fundamentally different view of human nature. Leftists see humans as innately good. That is why they think rehabilitation works. It is also why they think the United Nations is a good idea. If people are innately good then, surely, they can talk out their problems without resorting to war.

But conservatives have a more tragic view of human nature. We believe that people with innately destructive tendencies must be held in check. That is why we so frequently speak of traditional values. That is why we also speak of the need to have a punitive criminal justice system, which serves as a back-up plan when traditional values fail. The ideal system would mete out punishment that is swift, certain, and severe.

In a nutshell, conservatives believe the Reagan military build-up produced the fall of the Berlin Wall. And we believe that criminals, like communists, are on their best behavior when they are afraid.

Ever since I began my transformation from leftist atheist to conservative Christian I’ve been arguing with professors inclined to dismiss deterrence theory. Those professors usually fall into one of two groups. First, there are those who name a specific “get tough” program that they believe “hasn’t worked.” Second, there are those who just blandly assert that deterrence theory, in general, “doesn’t work.”

Today, I plan to respond to both of these groups. Let me start with the second group.

Every time I hear a professor say that deterrence theory “doesn’t work” I log on to his university web page to peruse his syllabi. And in each instance I find evidence that he really does believe in the efficacy of deterrence theory. That evidence comes in many forms such the assertion that “plagiarism will be punished under the academic honor code” or “those who miss more than two classes will have three points deducted from his or her final average.”

Obviously, these professors seek to deter cheating and skipping class through the medium of punishment, not negotiation. That means the professors are hypocrites – not because they fail to live up to the things they say but because they do not even believe them in the first place.

It is better to ignore these hypocrites altogether. But those in the aforementioned first group should be taken more seriously. Since they tend to rely on specific empirical data rather than broad theoretical assertions, I now invite them to participate in a little experiment meant to assess whether specific measures based on deterrence theory actually “work.”

I want all of those leftist professors who say that having a gun in one’s home does not deter burglary to do the following:

1. Post a sign on your front door saying “Caution: You Are About to Enter a Gun Free Zone.”

2. Send a post card to DrAdams.org, P.O. Box 319, Wrightsville Beach, NC, 28480. Just note that you have posted your sign and leave a return address so I can mail you a crime victimization survey this time next year.

Next, I want all of those gun owners who say that having a gun in one’s home does, in fact, deter burglary to do the following:

1. Post a sign on your front door saying “Caution: You Are About to Enter an Armed Household.”

2. Send a post card to DrAdams.org, P.O. Box 319, Wrightsville Beach, NC, 28480. Just note that you have posted your sign and leave a return address so I can mail you a crime victimization survey this time next year.

There are also professors who continue to assert that actually carrying a weapon with a valid permit does not deter violent crime. For those, it will not be necessary to conduct a crime victimization study. There are already 15 refereed studies indicating that concealed carry permits reduce violent crime. While some published studies are inconclusive, none draw the conclusion that the permits increase violence.

Nonetheless, some leftist professors continue to use scare tactics by ignoring the evidence and claiming that concealed carry permits do increase violence. Such assertions are immoral because they are dishonest.

Such assertions are also careless because even those without guns are safer living in areas that allow citizens to carry concealed. This is because violent criminals do not know who has a gun and who does not. But, today, I plan to change all that by asking these leftists professors to write to DrAdams.org to re-assert their opposition to concealed carry laws.

After they send a post card to the address supplied above, I’ll send them a free t-shirt saying “Caution: I’m an Un-Armed Citizen.” If they get into trouble wearing it, they can always negotiate their way out of the situation.
