Pastor who endorsed Huckabee cleared by IRS
link to original source

pictured to the left: Pastor Wiley Drake

A Southern Baptist pastor in California has been cleared by the Internal Revenue Service of any wrongdoing for endorsing Republican Mike Huckabee for president.

Last summer, Wiley Drake, pastor of the First Southern Baptist Church of Buena Park, issued a press release on church letterhead announcing his support of Huckabee and encouraging his fellow Southern Baptists to get behind the candidate. Drake also voiced his support for Huckabee on his Internet radio show.

Federal law prohibits church officials from intervening in political campaigns on behalf of a particular candidate without risking their ministry's tax-exempt status.

However, according to Drake, an IRS investigation found that the press release constituted a personal endorsement and that the radio show is not associated with the church. Drake says he will continue to be vocal about political matters.

"We're going to keep on fighting," says Drake. "We're going to keep on doing what we've been doing -- we're going to keep on preaching against sin, we're going to keep on preaching against bad politicians. And if the IRS doesn't like that, that's too bad," he states.

According to Associated Press, when Drake -- who is one of six candidates for president of the Southern Baptist Convention -- delivered the news Sunday to his congregation, it responded with applause. The SBC holds its annual meeting next month in Indianapolis.

Huckabee addresses Patrick Henry College grads
link to original source

pictured to the left: Mike Huckabee at Patrick Henry College

Students at Patrick Henry College are known for their ready access to top government and political leaders. That held true Saturday when former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee stopped in Purcellville to deliver the commencement address to the college's seventh graduating class.

Employing his trademark humor and strong dose of Baptist ministry, Huckabee urged the 63 graduates of the classical Christian liberal arts college to use their experience at the school to make a difference in the world-promoting strong moral values, self governance and adherence to the Golden Rule.

The nation's founding fathers, Huckabee said, would be appalled by the size of the federal government. The excess of government regulation and bureaucracy, he said, is caused by the failure of citizens to follow a strong moral code and to treat others as they would want to be treated.

Huckabee also urged students to focus on the next challenge ahead of them rather than trying to correct past missteps. He told the class of his training for a governors' bobsled challenge in Utah before the Winter Olympic games when a young instructor advised him to simply "steer for the curve ahead," noting that nothing could be done to change the performance on the path behind.

Huckabee recounted his experiences on the campaign trail as the southern governor emerged as a national champion of the Republican Party's conservative wing. In talks with reporters after the ceremony, Huckabee said that he continues to campaign in support of Sen. John McCain, the party's presumptive nominee, but said there have been no formal talks about the possibility of joining the ticket as a vice presidential nominee.

The college emphasizes coursework and internships in government service, journalism, history, literature and liberal arts. Students from 44 states attend the college. Of the 63 members of the graduating class, three were from Hawaii and three were from Loudoun County.

Huckabee noted that the students are coming to the campus to be trained as leaders.

"They are not just coming to get an education. They are coming to go forth from here as real leaders and as change agents," Huckabee said.

PHC Chancellor Michael P. Farris presented Huckabee with an honorary doctoral degree.

McCain "insiders" say Huckabee "not a team player"
link to original source

Talk inside the McCain campaign is that former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee isn't going to be given the high profile role in the general election campaign that he expected. "He's just not a team player and doesn't seem particularly committed to seeing John McCain win in November," says one McCain insider.

Before getting into the race himself, Huckabee famously told political supporters in Arkansas that he thought it would be a good thing for Hillary Clinton to win the presidency in 2008. On the campaign trail, Huckabee disputed that he'd made the remark, except one of the sources was one of Huckabee's ministers.

Huckabee, meanwhile, has turned down opportunities to serve as a surrogate for McCain, and instead is spending much of his time either auditioning for cable TV commentator gigs or attending fundraisers for House Republican candidates.

"Huckabee is more interested in laying the groundwork for his next campaign, not in seeing Republicans win the White House," says a House Republican. "He's looking to collect chits from us for down the road."

While the McCain campaign may have given up on Huckabee, it hasn't given up on reaching out to some of the higher profile evangelical Christian leaders, including Focus on the Family leader James Dobson.

McCain made of point of not currying favor with the evangelical community during the primary season, and now is doing what he can to tap into that important group for the general election. Dobson, according to McCain insiders, has been cool to the outreach, but not overtly dismissive.

Huckabee says he'd like to be McCain's #2
link to original article

Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee said Sunday he'd like to be John McCain's running mate.

"There's no one I would rather be on a ticket with than John McCain," said Huckabee, who was a stronger than expected challenger against McCain for the Republican presidential nomination. "All during the campaign when I was his rival, not a running mate, there was no one who was more complimentary of him publicly and privately. ... I still wanted to win, but if I couldn't, John McCain was always the guy I would have supported and have now supported.

"But whether or not I do the best for him, that's something that only he can decide," Huckabee said on NBC's "Meet the Press."

Huckabee, an ordained Baptist minister who had strong support from religious conservatives, won the leadoff Iowa caucuses and seven other states. He left the race in March after Arizona Sen. McCain clinched the nomination following a series of big victories.

Huckabee also apologized again for remarks he made Friday to the National Rifle Association. Responding to an offstage noise during a speech, Huckabee said it was Democrat Barack Obama diving to the floor after someone had aimed a gun at him. Huckabee issued an apology Friday evening.

"It was a dumb, off-the-cuff remark," he said. "I apologized for it immediately. Anybody that knows me knows that I would never, ever try to inject something like that to create any dangerous moment for any candidate."

Huckabee added: "It wasn't the first dumb thing I've ever said. And ... it won't be the last dumb thing I've ever said."

Huckabee joke takes aim at Obama
link to original source

Mike Huckabee, the former Arkansas governor, was known for his sense of humor on the presidential campaign trail, but on Friday he startled listeners with his latest improvisation, an imagined gun pointed at Senator Barack Obama.

Speaking at the annual convention of the National Rifle Association here, Mr. Huckabee, a Republican, was interrupted by a loud noise from backstage. “That was Barack Obama,” he said. “He just tripped off a chair. He’s getting ready to speak and somebody aimed a gun at him and he — he dove for the floor.”

Mr. Huckabee soon apologized for his comments. “I made an offhand remark that was in no way intended to offend or disparage Senator Obama,” he said hours later in a statement. “I apologize that my comments were offensive. That was never my intention.”

Mr. Obama’s safety has been an issue. When he was assigned Secret Service coverage last May, it was the earliest point in a campaign that a candidate had been given protection. His wife, Michelle, has voiced concerns about his safety.

Senator John McCain, the presumptive Republican nominee and Mr. Huckabee’s former campaign rival, spoke several hours after Mr. Huckabee’s appearance. Reporters traveling with Mr. McCain did not see or hear Mr. Huckabee on stage, but his remark prompted some murmurs from the crowd.

Mr. Obama, who appears likely to become the Democratic nominee, was not scheduled to speak at the convention.

His campaign declined to comment.

Nothing is certain but Death and the FairTax
by Mike S. Adams   link to original source

My good friend Lee – a Vietnam veteran and proud gun-toting conservative – recently declared to me that the FairTax is a great idea that will never actually happen. Because I am a true Reagan conservative – one full of optimism and faith in the American people – I respectfully dissent. And I write today to explain exactly how we will win the war against the I.R.S. and make the FairTax a reality.

We can all agree that the FairTax movement is a grass roots effort that must prevail over the resistance of politicians and lobbyists who have a powerful interest in maintaining the status quo. But this does not mean that every supporter of the FairTax must dedicate a significant amount of time volunteering to make the dream of abolishing the I.R.S. a reality. There is something retired veterans like Lee can do, which will require little time and money and will virtually guarantee the success of the FairTax movement.

The idea comes to me from a former student who was waiting on me the other night at the bar of a seafood restaurant in Wilmington. I had a beer in one hand and my copy of FairTax: The Truth in the other when an Obama supporter asked the following: “Why do you support the FairTax? We just need to change the tax code to punish corporations that are sending our jobs over to China.”

Armed with FairTax: The Truth, I responded with the following: “I’m from Texas as is Representative Bill Archer. He testified in front of Congress about the results of an interesting study of 500 companies in Japan. When asked what they would do if the U.S. abolished its present tax system and went with a consumption tax, 80% said they would build their next plant in America. The remaining 20% said they would relocate to America altogether. Now that’s change you can believe in!”

Clearly, my response gave the young man something to think about. But so did my waitress and former student. She jokingly said “Dr. Adams, you probably aren’t even reading that book. You’re just trying to provoke a debate.”

Of course, I really was reading the book but it gave me a very good idea. I decided to keep carrying it with me everywhere for a week after I finished reading it just to see whether that would be a good way of provoking debate on the issue. The very next day it produced the following exchange with a flat tax supporter:

Supporter of the Flat Tax of Yesterday (SOFTY): Sorry, I support the flat tax.
Adams: How often do you change your underwear?
SOFTY: What?
Adams: I assume you change your underwear every day?
SOFTY: Yes, what the hell does that have to do with it?
Adams: That means you’ve changed underwear 8036 times in the last 22 years.
SOFTY: And?
Adams: And the I.R.S. has changed the tax code 16,000 times in the last 22 years. They change the tax code twice as often as you change underwear. How long do you think a flat tax would remain flat?
SOFTY: (Silence)
Adams: Would you like to borrow my book?

I’m sure SOFTY was still thinking about the FairTax the next day while he was (hopefully) changing his underwear. Meanwhile, I was sitting at a bar having this exchange:

Badly and Desperately Pessimistic Realtor (BADPR): I know the FairTax is going to kill people in my line of work.
Adams: I think you’re exaggerating, to say the least. I’m about to buy my fourth house and my first new house.
BADPR: So.
Adams: So I’m like a lot of people out there. Most of our home purchases are not of new homes.
BADPR: And?
Adams: And the FairTax only applies to new home purchases.
BADPR: Can I borrow your book?
Adams: Sure. And be sure to read the portion on embedded taxes, too. It may convince you that new home purchases will be impacted to a lesser extent than you imagine.
BADPR: I will.
Adams: Finally, and in the interests of full disclosure, I do know someone who bought four new homes in a row. He was a very wealthy former student of mine. Before he went to prison he bought four new homes. But he never paid income tax on the cocaine he sold on his way to becoming wealthy. Too bad we didn’t have a consumption tax like the one you will read about in the book I gave you.

Some conversations were a little more cumbersome. Like this one I had with a young fellow who was drinking Budweiser at 12:35 p.m. in a pizza place in Wilmington:

Bud-loving unemployed drunk dude (BUDD): What are you reading?
Adams: FairTax: The Truth.
(The portion of the conversation talking about our waitress’ tattoos is deleted).
BUDD: If I thought it would get me a job, I’d be all for it.
Adams: Here, take my copy. Make sure you read the chart on page 131. It shows how states with high income taxes fare relative to states with no income taxes in terms of economic growth.
BUDD: Are you just giving me this?
Adams: Yep. I’ve been making good money on the speaking circuit this year. When people have more money they are more charitable. See the statistics on page 166. If you agree with it, buy a copy for someone else.

My little experiment with FairTax: The Truth convinced me of a few things. First, it convinced me that it’s an easy way to get people talking about the FairTax. It also convinced me that most people who oppose the FairTax do so because they are insufficiently educated about all of its benefits. I read Boortz and Linder’s first FairTax book twice and thought I understood it well enough to explain all of its benefits. But after I read Fair Tax: The Truth I realized there were more benefits than I had imagined previously.

I don’t have much time to volunteer to the FairTax cause. But I do have time to briefly discuss it at the coffee shop in the morning, the diner in the afternoon, or the restaurant at night. That is why I’ve decided to extend my experiment by carrying FairTax books with me every day for the next year. I’ve also decided to give my copies away to anyone who promises to read them.

I plan to write off all these FairTax books as “charitable contributions” on next year’s tax return. If you join me today, I won’t have to do it again.

John McCain and the global warming train
by David Limbaugh   link to original source

If John McCain were truly a maverick, he would publicly break from the politically correct culture that demands obedience to its global warming narrative. But sadly, he continues to do the opposite.

Liberals have denominated McCain a maverick because he has taken so many positions contradictory to his party's platform and to the conservative ideology that undergirds it. Now that he is the putative Republican nominee, you don't hear much about his maverick nature, but it's certainly not because he's changed his ways in opposing his party.

Last week, he affirmed his commitment to comprehensive immigration reform, even though earlier he stepped back from it to curry favor with conservatives. One wonders what other shoes will inevitably drop should he win the presidency, especially because he has indicated he would most likely be a one-termer.

Will he revert to his visceral revulsion to the Bush supply-side tax cuts? Many supply-siders, after taking McCain to the woodshed on the issue, assure us he can be trusted on it.

If so, their efforts will redound to the benefit of the economy and nation should McCain win the election. But some of these same supply-side advocates insist we shouldn't expect him to move rightward on too many other issues.

Sorry, but I reject that zero-sum thinking, as should my fellow supply-siders; they certainly do in the realm of tax policy. While I will vote for McCain against either Democratic opponent, I don't believe we should abandon efforts to reform the "reformer" on other issues besides taxes. Are we supposed to declare a moratorium on the expression of our principles for fear it could damage his electability?

If conservatives don't make an effort to hold McCain accountable for his liberal proclivities, then no one will, to the guaranteed detriment of the national interest. In fact, pushing him to the right while we still have a chance will enhance his electability.

Which brings me back to the subject that inspired this column: McCain's regrettable upcoming speech outlining his vision to combat global warming.

In a preview of the speech, CNN reports that McCain will say: "We stand warned by serious and credible scientists across the world that time is short and the dangers are great. The most relevant question now is whether our own government is equal to the challenge."

No, Sen. McCain, the most relevant question is whether political leaders will have the diligence to study this issue and the integrity and courage to stand up to the propaganda of the enviro-bullies. The question is whether you can be a maverick where it counts.

It is not Earth's ecosystem that hangs in the balance, but America's future. Those whose vision isn't blurred by green-colored glasses and the temptation to win accolades from the leftist-dominated culture can see that the global push to "save the planet" is more about destroying capitalism, private property and Western culture than sound, science-based environmental stewardship. Never mind the staggering contradiction that free market economies produce cleaner environs.

Indeed, I hate to break it to some of my fellow evangelical Christians who are falling into the trap along with McCain, but the global warming proselytes don't share your worldview. Do you realize you are jumping in bed with those who are promoting a pantheistic deification of the environment and a diminution of the dignity of human beings created in God's image?

Contrary to the mandated script from the warming zealots, there is plenty of credible dissent in the scientific community about global warming, particularly man's role in it. Much of this dissent comes from scientists in fields related to weather studies. Imagine that.

The fact that the enviro-church fathers have "outlawed" dissenting opinion and slander those offering it tells us something fishy is afoot.

And for you McCain supporters who think the only issues that matter are the war and taxes, not to mention abortion and immigration -- all of which are incalculably important -- I urge you not to underestimate the gravity of the global warming issue and the potentially devastating consequences of rolling over on it.

If Republicans also acquiesce to this false religion and its required "good works," we are headed toward a path of economic and societal destruction in the name of saving the planet.

It's time for Newt Gingrich to get off that couch with Nancy Pelosi and for John McCain to jump off this insidious global warming train that might as well be armed with enemy bombs and aimed at the heart of this nation and its economy.
