Huckabee backs Cavanaugh for Alabama PSC link to original source Former presidential candidate Mike Huckabee on Monday threw his support behind an ex-state Republican Party official in her bid to become the next president of the Alabama Public Service Commission. Republican Twinkle Andress Cavanaugh told the AP that television and radio ads featuring the former Arkansas governor will start running this week. Cavanaugh's political ad with
Mike Huckabee
Cavanaugh, a former state GOP executive director and chairwoman, said she got to know Huckabee through her work with the party. Huckabee won Alabama's presidential primary in February, but later dropped out of the race. The PSC president presides over the three-member commission, which regulates Alabama Power Co. and other utilities. Cavanaugh said having a national figure cut an ad for her helps bring attention to a down-ballot race and highlights her experience and connections. Cavanaugh faces communications consultant Matt Chancey of Chelsea and former PSC employee Jack Hornady of Montgomery in the Republican primary June 3. Chancey picked up an endorsement last month from former Alabama Chief Justice Roy Moore, who made headlines several years ago for refusing to remove a Ten Commandments monument from the rotunda of the state courthouse. Chancey said Monday he doesn't plan any endorsement ads. "I'm not looking at this as a name-dropping contact. I want to drop utility rates," he said. Hornady said the PSC needs a cost-cutting philosophy and to free businesses from unnecessary regulation. "That was not always the case with Arkansas under Governor Huckabee, but it will always be the case on the Alabama PSC under my leadership," he said. Former Lt. Gov. Lucy Baxley is the lone Democratic candidate. The general election winner will replace Republican Jim Sullivan, who did not seek re-election. Huckabee on MSNBC tonight 5/13/08 link to original source With Joe Scarborough on vacation
this week, MSNBC needed a Republican
foil to balance Harold Ford, Jr. in their "Insiders" segment during
primary coverage tomorrow. The network landed someone high profile — former presidential candidate Mike Huckabee. Huckabee will provide, "insight and analysis throughout the evening," during MSNBC's primary programming, beginning at 6pmET. TVNewser will have all the coverage notes from the networks and cablers tomorrow for the West Virginia primary (not scheduled to last until well after 1amET this time) tomorrow. Huckabee on top of McCain's VP short list link to original source Mike Huckabee, the former governor of Arkansas and defeated contender for the GOP presidential nomination, is currently at the top of John McCain's short list for a running mate. At least that's the word from a top McCain fundraiser and longtime Republican moneyman who has spoken to McCain's inner circle. The fundraiser is less than thrilled with the idea of Huckabee as the vice presidential nominee, and many economic conservatives—turned off by the populist tone of Huckabee's campaign and his tax record as governor—are likely to share that marked lack of enthusiasm. But here is the logic of picking Huckabee: 1) He is a great campaigner and communicator who could both shore up support in the South among social conservatives (Huckabee is a former Baptist minister) and appeal to working-class voters in the critical "Big 10" states of Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Ohio. 2) As any pollster knows, voters search for candidates who "care about people like me," and Huckabee would probably score a lot higher on that quality than millionaire investor Mitt Romney. Plus, given all the turmoil on Wall Street, 2008 would seem to be a bad year to pick a former investment banker for veep. 3) Economic conservatives and supply-siders may balk, but the threat of four years of Obamanomics and higher investment, income, and corporate taxes might be enough to keep them on board. Let me add that a top Republican political strategist told me about a month ago that he also believed Huckabee to be the leading veep contender. Huckabee: Novak's column "total and absolute nonsense" link to original source Bob Novak today has a column suggesting that some "U.S. Christians are not reconciled to McCain's candidacy but instead regard the prospective presidency of Barack Obama in the nature of a biblical plague visited upon a sinful people. These militants look at former Baptist preacher Huckabee as 'God's candidate' for president in 2012. Whether they can be written off as merely a troublesome fringe group depends on Huckabee's course... "One experienced, credible activist in Christian politics who would not let his name be used told me that Huckabee, in personal conversation with him, had embraced the concept that an Obama presidency might be what the American people deserve," Novak writes. "That fits what has largely been a fringe position among evangelicals: that the pain of an Obama presidency is in keeping with the Bible's prophecy. "According to this activist, at the heart of the let-Obama-win movement is longtime Virginia conservative leader Michael Farris -- the nation's leading home-school advocate, who is now chancellor of Patrick Henry College (in Purcellville, Va.) for home-schooled students. Best known politically as the losing Republican candidate for lieutenant governor of Virginia in 1993, Farris is regarded as one of the hardest-edged Christian politicians. He is reported in evangelical circles to promote the biblical justification for an Obama plague-like presidency." I e-mailed Gov. Huckabee for a response, and he quickly shot back: "it’s total and absolute nonsense! I told Bob this last week in a phone call. He went with the story with his 'unnamed source.' Should have been listed as an 'unbrained source.' He must have liked the story no matter how ludicrous it is. There was NO conversation between Mike Farris and me to that effect. None. I don’t know of anyone who feels that 'America deserves Obama.' "I have no idea where this comes from unless from someone jealous because of the really good relationship that I have with McCain and hoping to diminish it. You guys (in the media) need to remember that I was the one guy who didn’t have to take back a thing I ever said about McCain since if anything, I was accused of being TOO supportive of him." Huck notes that he also wrote about this on the Huckablog today. Video: I'm voting for Mike Huckabee! Huckabee hasn't released all delegates yet link to original source Two months after quitting his
Republican presidential bid, Mike
Huckabee still has delegates duty-bound to vote for him in the party’s
September national convention. The former Arkansas governor racked up 273 pledged delegates before bowing out to John Mc-Cain’s insurmountable lead. On Tuesday, Huckabee picked up at least eight more delegates from his 12 percent share of the North Carolina primary vote. McCain has more than enough delegates to win the nomination on the first vote at the party convention in St. Paul, Minn. And while Democrats fret over the prospect of their own divided convention, Republicans don’t expect anything less than a near-unanimous show of support for their nominee. But rules are rules, and Huckabee has yet to release much of his pledged support. The Oklahoman last week reported that Huckabee had officially cut ties with his six Oklahoma delegates. But several states in which Huckabee picked up some of his strongest support still are officially required to dispatch batches of delegates to him when the roll is called in St. Paul. That is, they are until Huckabee officially lets them loose. “I have received no official word that he has done that yet,” said Corrie Kangas, political director for the Kansas Republican Party. “It’s in the works, I believe. I have every confidence that by the time the convention rolls around, they’ll be released to McCain.” The state party asked for an official release of Huckabee’s 36 pledged delegates soon after he dropped out. “As far as I know, the letter’s on its way,” Kangas said. A former candidate can request that his released delegates vote for someone else at the convention - as Mitt Romney already has done from Utah to Arkansas. But released delegates are free to do whatever they want. Asked whether and when Huckabee is releasing his delegates, Sarah Huckabee, the former governor’s spokesman and director of his political-action committee, reiterated in an e-mail that he has endorsed McCain. “He expects and hopes all of his delegates will do the same,” she said. For that to happen, though, Huckabee has some paperwork to do. Other than in Oklahoma, there’s been no word of any delegate releases. And party officials in Alabama, Tennessee and Arkansas - Feb. 5 states that Huckabee won by some of his biggest margins - said a majority of their pledged delegates still are Huckabee delegates. “We’re trying to work all that out now,” said Arkansas party director Karen Ray. But party officials aren’t sweating the delay, noting that the convention is four months away and that Huckabee has been busy with his post-campaign life. A spokesman for the North Carolina party said Friday that Huckabee will get his share of delegates and ultimately, surely, release them. The party hasn’t yet asked anybody to release delegates. “I mean, right now we’ve still got Ron Paul in the race, and he got 7 percent of them. So, he’s going to get some delegates,” North Carolina party spokesman Brent Woodcox said. “Right now, we’re leaving it up to the presidential candidates.” McCain's Christian problem link to original source John McCain, who as the
Republican candidate for president has spent
the past two months trying to consolidate right-wing support, has a
problem of disputed dimensions with a vital component of the
conservative coalition: evangelicals. The biggest question is whether
Mike Huckabee is part of the problem or the solution for McCain. Some U.S. Christians are not reconciled to McCain's candidacy but instead regard the prospective presidency of Barack Obama in the nature of a biblical plague visited upon a sinful people. These militants look at former Baptist preacher Huckabee as "God's candidate" for president in 2012. Whether they can be written off as merely a troublesome fringe group depends on Huckabee's course. Huckabee's announced support of McCain is unequivocal, and he is regarded in the McCain camp as a friend and ally. But credible activists are spreading the word that Huckabee secretly allies himself with the bitter-end opposition. That hardly seems possible considering his public backing, but critics of Huckabee's 10 years as governor of Arkansas say he is all too capable of playing a double game. McCain and Huckabee were friendly rivals in this year's Republican competition, sharing contempt for Mitt Romney. Indeed, McCain would not be where he is today had Huckabee not mobilized born-again voters to upset Romney in the Iowa caucuses. All of Romney's efforts to overtake McCain in conservative Southern state primaries were stifled by Huckabee's success in those contests. Huckabee quickly endorsed McCain once he clinched the nomination. They bonded publicly in Little Rock on April 24 during McCain's tour. Nevertheless, the word is that some evangelicals dispute Huckabee's support. One experienced, credible activist in Christian politics who would not let his name be used told me that Huckabee, in personal conversation with him, had embraced the concept that an Obama presidency might be what the American people deserve. That fits what has largely been a fringe position among evangelicals: that the pain of an Obama presidency is in keeping with the Bible's prophecy. According to this activist, at the heart of the let-Obama-win movement is longtime Virginia conservative leader Michael Farris -- the nation's leading home-school advocate, who is now chancellor of Patrick Henry College (in Purcellville, Va.) for home-schooled students. Best known politically as the losing Republican candidate for lieutenant governor of Virginia in 1993, Farris is regarded as one of the hardest-edged Christian politicians. He is reported in evangelical circles to promote the biblical justification for an Obama plague-like presidency. In conversations with me, Huckabee and Farris both denied saying that an Obama presidency should be inflicted on the country. Huckabee was enthusiastic in his support for McCain, noting how well they had gotten along during their primary competition. Farris is another matter. A vigorous supporter of Huckabee for president, he has not endorsed McCain and may never do so (though he quickly adds that he never would vote for Obama or Hillary Clinton). "I am concerned about what judges [McCain] may name," Farris told me, "and the test will be who he selects for vice president." He made it clear that Huckabee would be his choice, and ruefully added, "I understand he is not under consideration." At McCain headquarters, no doubt is expressed about Huckabee's loyalty. "I feel we haven't used him [Huckabee] enough," McCain campaign manager Rick Davis told me. McCain's strategists are more concerned that the libertarian Rep. Ron Paul has not abandoned his candidacy, keeps fighting for delegates and says he will not endorse McCain. Even taking Huckabee's professions of support for McCain at face value, he is not leaving politics for the lecture circuit. He has formed the Huck PAC to back Republican candidates, his supporters have established a Web site (Huck4America.com), and Huckabee backers are behind the Government Is Not God PAC, which aims to discourage McCain from naming Romney as his vice president. Mike Huckabee has emerged from obscurity to become a major factor in American politics leading evangelical Christians. The McCain campaign counts on him to energize supporters who would rather wait for Huckabee 2012, not to encourage those dreams. The new $5 bill ![]() by Mike S. Adams link to original source My good friend Lee – a Vietnam
veteran and proud gun-toting
conservative – recently declared to me that the FairTax is a great idea
that will never actually happen. Because I am a true Reagan
conservative – one full of optimism and faith in the American people –
I respectfully dissent. And I write today to explain exactly how we
will win the war against the I.R.S. and make the FairTax a reality. We can all agree that the FairTax movement is a grass roots effort that must prevail over the resistance of politicians and lobbyists who have a powerful interest in maintaining the status quo. But this does not mean that every supporter of the FairTax must dedicate a significant amount of time volunteering to make the dream of abolishing the I.R.S. a reality. There is something retired veterans like Lee can do, which will require little time and money and will virtually guarantee the success of the FairTax movement. The idea comes to me from a former student who was waiting on me the other night at the bar of a seafood restaurant in Wilmington. I had a beer in one hand and my copy of FairTax: The Truth in the other when an Obama supporter asked the following: “Why do you support the FairTax? We just need to change the tax code to punish corporations that are sending our jobs over to China.” Armed with FairTax: The Truth, I responded with the following: “I’m from Texas as is Representative Bill Archer. He testified in front of Congress about the results of an interesting study of 500 companies in Japan. When asked what they would do if the U.S. abolished its present tax system and went with a consumption tax, 80% said they would build their next plant in America. The remaining 20% said they would relocate to America altogether. Now that’s change you can believe in!” Clearly, my response gave the young man something to think about. But so did my waitress and former student. She jokingly said “Dr. Adams, you probably aren’t even reading that book. You’re just trying to provoke a debate.” Of course, I really was reading the book but it gave me a very good idea. I decided to keep carrying it with me everywhere for a week after I finished reading it just to see whether that would be a good way of provoking debate on the issue. The very next day it produced the following exchange with a flat tax supporter: Supporter of the Flat Tax of Yesterday (SOFTY): Sorry, I support the flat tax. Adams: How often do you change your underwear? SOFTY: What? Adams: I assume you change your underwear every day? SOFTY: Yes, what the hell does that have to do with it? Adams: That means you’ve changed underwear 8036 times in the last 22 years. SOFTY: And? Adams: And the I.R.S. has changed the tax code 16,000 times in the last 22 years. They change the tax code twice as often as you change underwear. How long do you think a flat tax would remain flat? SOFTY: (Silence) Adams: Would you like to borrow my book? I’m sure SOFTY was still thinking about the FairTax the next day while he was (hopefully) changing his underwear. Meanwhile, I was sitting at a bar having this exchange: Badly and Desperately Pessimistic Realtor (BADPR): I know the FairTax is going to kill people in my line of work. Adams: I think you’re exaggerating, to say the least. I’m about to buy my fourth house and my first new house. BADPR: So. Adams: So I’m like a lot of people out there. Most of our home purchases are not of new homes. BADPR: And? Adams: And the FairTax only applies to new home purchases. BADPR: Can I borrow your book? Adams: Sure. And be sure to read the portion on embedded taxes, too. It may convince you that new home purchases will be impacted to a lesser extent than you imagine. BADPR: I will. Adams: Finally, and in the interests of full disclosure, I do know someone who bought four new homes in a row. He was a very wealthy former student of mine. Before he went to prison he bought four new homes. But he never paid income tax on the cocaine he sold on his way to becoming wealthy. Too bad we didn’t have a consumption tax like the one you will read about in the book I gave you. Some conversations were a little more cumbersome. Like this one I had with a young fellow who was drinking Budweiser at 12:35 p.m. in a pizza place in Wilmington: Bud-loving unemployed drunk dude (BUDD): What are you reading? Adams: FairTax: The Truth. (The portion of the conversation talking about our waitress’ tattoos is deleted). BUDD: If I thought it would get me a job, I’d be all for it. Adams: Here, take my copy. Make sure you read the chart on page 131. It shows how states with high income taxes fare relative to states with no income taxes in terms of economic growth. BUDD: Are you just giving me this? Adams: Yep. I’ve been making good money on the speaking circuit this year. When people have more money they are more charitable. See the statistics on page 166. If you agree with it, buy a copy for someone else. My little experiment with FairTax: The Truth convinced me of a few things. First, it convinced me that it’s an easy way to get people talking about the FairTax. It also convinced me that most people who oppose the FairTax do so because they are insufficiently educated about all of its benefits. I read Boortz and Linder’s first FairTax book twice and thought I understood it well enough to explain all of its benefits. But after I read Fair Tax: The Truth I realized there were more benefits than I had imagined previously. I don’t have much time to volunteer to the FairTax cause. But I do have time to briefly discuss it at the coffee shop in the morning, the diner in the afternoon, or the restaurant at night. That is why I’ve decided to extend my experiment by carrying FairTax books with me every day for the next year. I’ve also decided to give my copies away to anyone who promises to read them. I plan to write off all these FairTax books as “charitable contributions” on next year’s tax return. If you join me today, I won’t have to do it again. John McCain and the global warming train by David Limbaugh link to original source If John McCain were truly a
maverick, he would publicly break
from the politically correct culture that demands obedience to its
global warming narrative. But sadly, he continues to do the opposite.Liberals have denominated McCain a maverick because he has taken so many positions contradictory to his party's platform and to the conservative ideology that undergirds it. Now that he is the putative Republican nominee, you don't hear much about his maverick nature, but it's certainly not because he's changed his ways in opposing his party. Last week, he affirmed his commitment to comprehensive immigration reform, even though earlier he stepped back from it to curry favor with conservatives. One wonders what other shoes will inevitably drop should he win the presidency, especially because he has indicated he would most likely be a one-termer. Will he revert to his visceral revulsion to the Bush supply-side tax cuts? Many supply-siders, after taking McCain to the woodshed on the issue, assure us he can be trusted on it. If so, their efforts will redound to the benefit of the economy and nation should McCain win the election. But some of these same supply-side advocates insist we shouldn't expect him to move rightward on too many other issues. Sorry, but I reject that zero-sum thinking, as should my fellow supply-siders; they certainly do in the realm of tax policy. While I will vote for McCain against either Democratic opponent, I don't believe we should abandon efforts to reform the "reformer" on other issues besides taxes. Are we supposed to declare a moratorium on the expression of our principles for fear it could damage his electability? If conservatives don't make an effort to hold McCain accountable for his liberal proclivities, then no one will, to the guaranteed detriment of the national interest. In fact, pushing him to the right while we still have a chance will enhance his electability. Which brings me back to the subject that inspired this column: McCain's regrettable upcoming speech outlining his vision to combat global warming. ![]() In a preview of the speech, CNN reports that McCain will say: "We stand warned by serious and credible scientists across the world that time is short and the dangers are great. The most relevant question now is whether our own government is equal to the challenge." No, Sen. McCain, the most relevant question is whether political leaders will have the diligence to study this issue and the integrity and courage to stand up to the propaganda of the enviro-bullies. The question is whether you can be a maverick where it counts. It is not Earth's ecosystem that hangs in the balance, but America's future. Those whose vision isn't blurred by green-colored glasses and the temptation to win accolades from the leftist-dominated culture can see that the global push to "save the planet" is more about destroying capitalism, private property and Western culture than sound, science-based environmental stewardship. Never mind the staggering contradiction that free market economies produce cleaner environs. Indeed, I hate to break it to some of my fellow evangelical Christians who are falling into the trap along with McCain, but the global warming proselytes don't share your worldview. Do you realize you are jumping in bed with those who are promoting a pantheistic deification of the environment and a diminution of the dignity of human beings created in God's image? Contrary to the mandated script from the warming zealots, there is plenty of credible dissent in the scientific community about global warming, particularly man's role in it. Much of this dissent comes from scientists in fields related to weather studies. Imagine that. The fact that the enviro-church fathers have "outlawed" dissenting opinion and slander those offering it tells us something fishy is afoot. And for you McCain supporters who think the only issues that matter are the war and taxes, not to mention abortion and immigration -- all of which are incalculably important -- I urge you not to underestimate the gravity of the global warming issue and the potentially devastating consequences of rolling over on it. If Republicans also acquiesce to this false religion and its required "good works," we are headed toward a path of economic and societal destruction in the name of saving the planet. It's time for Newt Gingrich to get off that couch with Nancy Pelosi and for John McCain to jump off this insidious global warming train that might as well be armed with enemy bombs and aimed at the heart of this nation and its economy. |
