Huckabee on top of McCain's VP short list link to original source Mike Huckabee, the former governor of Arkansas and defeated contender for the GOP presidential nomination, is currently at the top of John McCain's short list for a running mate. At least that's the word from a top McCain fundraiser and longtime Republican moneyman who has spoken to McCain's inner circle. The fundraiser is less than thrilled with the idea of Huckabee as the vice presidential nominee, and many economic conservatives—turned off by the populist tone of Huckabee's campaign and his tax record as governor—are likely to share that marked lack of enthusiasm. But here is the logic of picking Huckabee: 1) He is a great campaigner and communicator who could both shore up support in the South among social conservatives (Huckabee is a former Baptist minister) and appeal to working-class voters in the critical "Big 10" states of Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Ohio. 2) As any pollster knows, voters search for candidates who "care about people like me," and Huckabee would probably score a lot higher on that quality than millionaire investor Mitt Romney. Plus, given all the turmoil on Wall Street, 2008 would seem to be a bad year to pick a former investment banker for veep. 3) Economic conservatives and supply-siders may balk, but the threat of four years of Obamanomics and higher investment, income, and corporate taxes might be enough to keep them on board. Let me add that a top Republican political strategist told me about a month ago that he also believed Huckabee to be the leading veep contender. Huckabee: Novak's column "total and absolute nonsense" link to original source Bob Novak today has a column suggesting that some "U.S. Christians are not reconciled to McCain's candidacy but instead regard the prospective presidency of Barack Obama in the nature of a biblical plague visited upon a sinful people. These militants look at former Baptist preacher Huckabee as 'God's candidate' for president in 2012. Whether they can be written off as merely a troublesome fringe group depends on Huckabee's course... "One experienced, credible activist in Christian politics who would not let his name be used told me that Huckabee, in personal conversation with him, had embraced the concept that an Obama presidency might be what the American people deserve," Novak writes. "That fits what has largely been a fringe position among evangelicals: that the pain of an Obama presidency is in keeping with the Bible's prophecy. "According to this activist, at the heart of the let-Obama-win movement is longtime Virginia conservative leader Michael Farris -- the nation's leading home-school advocate, who is now chancellor of Patrick Henry College (in Purcellville, Va.) for home-schooled students. Best known politically as the losing Republican candidate for lieutenant governor of Virginia in 1993, Farris is regarded as one of the hardest-edged Christian politicians. He is reported in evangelical circles to promote the biblical justification for an Obama plague-like presidency." I e-mailed Gov. Huckabee for a response, and he quickly shot back: "it’s total and absolute nonsense! I told Bob this last week in a phone call. He went with the story with his 'unnamed source.' Should have been listed as an 'unbrained source.' He must have liked the story no matter how ludicrous it is. There was NO conversation between Mike Farris and me to that effect. None. I don’t know of anyone who feels that 'America deserves Obama.' "I have no idea where this comes from unless from someone jealous because of the really good relationship that I have with McCain and hoping to diminish it. You guys (in the media) need to remember that I was the one guy who didn’t have to take back a thing I ever said about McCain since if anything, I was accused of being TOO supportive of him." Huck notes that he also wrote about this on the Huckablog today. Video: I'm voting for Mike Huckabee! Huckabee hasn't released all delegates yet link to original source Two months after quitting his
Republican presidential bid, Mike
Huckabee still has delegates duty-bound to vote for him in the party’s
September national convention. The former Arkansas governor racked up 273 pledged delegates before bowing out to John Mc-Cain’s insurmountable lead. On Tuesday, Huckabee picked up at least eight more delegates from his 12 percent share of the North Carolina primary vote. McCain has more than enough delegates to win the nomination on the first vote at the party convention in St. Paul, Minn. And while Democrats fret over the prospect of their own divided convention, Republicans don’t expect anything less than a near-unanimous show of support for their nominee. But rules are rules, and Huckabee has yet to release much of his pledged support. The Oklahoman last week reported that Huckabee had officially cut ties with his six Oklahoma delegates. But several states in which Huckabee picked up some of his strongest support still are officially required to dispatch batches of delegates to him when the roll is called in St. Paul. That is, they are until Huckabee officially lets them loose. “I have received no official word that he has done that yet,” said Corrie Kangas, political director for the Kansas Republican Party. “It’s in the works, I believe. I have every confidence that by the time the convention rolls around, they’ll be released to McCain.” The state party asked for an official release of Huckabee’s 36 pledged delegates soon after he dropped out. “As far as I know, the letter’s on its way,” Kangas said. A former candidate can request that his released delegates vote for someone else at the convention - as Mitt Romney already has done from Utah to Arkansas. But released delegates are free to do whatever they want. Asked whether and when Huckabee is releasing his delegates, Sarah Huckabee, the former governor’s spokesman and director of his political-action committee, reiterated in an e-mail that he has endorsed McCain. “He expects and hopes all of his delegates will do the same,” she said. For that to happen, though, Huckabee has some paperwork to do. Other than in Oklahoma, there’s been no word of any delegate releases. And party officials in Alabama, Tennessee and Arkansas - Feb. 5 states that Huckabee won by some of his biggest margins - said a majority of their pledged delegates still are Huckabee delegates. “We’re trying to work all that out now,” said Arkansas party director Karen Ray. But party officials aren’t sweating the delay, noting that the convention is four months away and that Huckabee has been busy with his post-campaign life. A spokesman for the North Carolina party said Friday that Huckabee will get his share of delegates and ultimately, surely, release them. The party hasn’t yet asked anybody to release delegates. “I mean, right now we’ve still got Ron Paul in the race, and he got 7 percent of them. So, he’s going to get some delegates,” North Carolina party spokesman Brent Woodcox said. “Right now, we’re leaving it up to the presidential candidates.” McCain's Christian problem link to original source John McCain, who as the
Republican candidate for president has spent
the past two months trying to consolidate right-wing support, has a
problem of disputed dimensions with a vital component of the
conservative coalition: evangelicals. The biggest question is whether
Mike Huckabee is part of the problem or the solution for McCain. Some U.S. Christians are not reconciled to McCain's candidacy but instead regard the prospective presidency of Barack Obama in the nature of a biblical plague visited upon a sinful people. These militants look at former Baptist preacher Huckabee as "God's candidate" for president in 2012. Whether they can be written off as merely a troublesome fringe group depends on Huckabee's course. Huckabee's announced support of McCain is unequivocal, and he is regarded in the McCain camp as a friend and ally. But credible activists are spreading the word that Huckabee secretly allies himself with the bitter-end opposition. That hardly seems possible considering his public backing, but critics of Huckabee's 10 years as governor of Arkansas say he is all too capable of playing a double game. McCain and Huckabee were friendly rivals in this year's Republican competition, sharing contempt for Mitt Romney. Indeed, McCain would not be where he is today had Huckabee not mobilized born-again voters to upset Romney in the Iowa caucuses. All of Romney's efforts to overtake McCain in conservative Southern state primaries were stifled by Huckabee's success in those contests. Huckabee quickly endorsed McCain once he clinched the nomination. They bonded publicly in Little Rock on April 24 during McCain's tour. Nevertheless, the word is that some evangelicals dispute Huckabee's support. One experienced, credible activist in Christian politics who would not let his name be used told me that Huckabee, in personal conversation with him, had embraced the concept that an Obama presidency might be what the American people deserve. That fits what has largely been a fringe position among evangelicals: that the pain of an Obama presidency is in keeping with the Bible's prophecy. According to this activist, at the heart of the let-Obama-win movement is longtime Virginia conservative leader Michael Farris -- the nation's leading home-school advocate, who is now chancellor of Patrick Henry College (in Purcellville, Va.) for home-schooled students. Best known politically as the losing Republican candidate for lieutenant governor of Virginia in 1993, Farris is regarded as one of the hardest-edged Christian politicians. He is reported in evangelical circles to promote the biblical justification for an Obama plague-like presidency. In conversations with me, Huckabee and Farris both denied saying that an Obama presidency should be inflicted on the country. Huckabee was enthusiastic in his support for McCain, noting how well they had gotten along during their primary competition. Farris is another matter. A vigorous supporter of Huckabee for president, he has not endorsed McCain and may never do so (though he quickly adds that he never would vote for Obama or Hillary Clinton). "I am concerned about what judges [McCain] may name," Farris told me, "and the test will be who he selects for vice president." He made it clear that Huckabee would be his choice, and ruefully added, "I understand he is not under consideration." At McCain headquarters, no doubt is expressed about Huckabee's loyalty. "I feel we haven't used him [Huckabee] enough," McCain campaign manager Rick Davis told me. McCain's strategists are more concerned that the libertarian Rep. Ron Paul has not abandoned his candidacy, keeps fighting for delegates and says he will not endorse McCain. Even taking Huckabee's professions of support for McCain at face value, he is not leaving politics for the lecture circuit. He has formed the Huck PAC to back Republican candidates, his supporters have established a Web site (Huck4America.com), and Huckabee backers are behind the Government Is Not God PAC, which aims to discourage McCain from naming Romney as his vice president. Mike Huckabee has emerged from obscurity to become a major factor in American politics leading evangelical Christians. The McCain campaign counts on him to energize supporters who would rather wait for Huckabee 2012, not to encourage those dreams. Pastor that endorsed Huckabee will challenge IRS rules link to original source pictured
left: Steve and Becky RiggleA right-wing advocacy group plans a challenge to U.S. Internal Revenue Service rules that churches involved in politics lose their tax-exempt status. The Alliance Defense Fund of Scottsdale, Ariz., is recruiting ministers to make political sermons Sept. 28, a few weeks before the presidential election, The Wall Street Journal reported Friday. The group hopes to challenge the constitutionality of the tax law, the report said. Erik Stanley, senior legal counsel for the alliance, said about 80 ministers, including a Catholic priest, have said they might join the protest. He said he hopes to get 40 to 50 to participate, including some liberals. The Rev. Steve Riggle of Grace Community Church in Houston said he told his flock before the Texas primary he supported former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee. "The government should not be telling the church what it should or should not be saying," Riggle said. "As a pastor, a private citizen, I can speak for myself. The IRS cannot quench my voice." Rob Boston of Americans United for Separation of Church and State said the tax exemption granted churches "comes with conditions." "So if any pastor out there feels he is gagged or can't speak on partisan politics ... forgo the tax exemption and say what you want," said Boston. Federal law prohibits churches from endorsing political candidates, but they are permitted to advocate positions on issues. Huckabee videos from CNN 5/8/08 Part I

by Walter Williams link to original source Now that another Earth Day has
come and gone, let's look at some
environmentalist predictions that they would prefer we forget. At the first Earth Day celebration, in 1969, environmentalist Nigel Calder warned, "The threat of a new ice age must now stand alongside nuclear war as a likely source of wholesale death and misery for mankind." C.C. Wallen of the World Meteorological Organization said, "The cooling since 1940 has been large enough and consistent enough that it will not soon be reversed." In 1968, Professor Paul Ehrlich, Vice President Gore's hero and mentor, predicted there would be a major food shortage in the U.S. and "in the 1970s ... hundreds of millions of people are going to starve to death." Ehrlich forecasted that 65 million Americans would die of starvation between 1980 and 1989, and by 1999 the U.S. population would have declined to 22.6 million. Ehrlich's predictions about England were gloomier: "If I were a gambler, I would take even money that England will not exist in the year 2000." In 1972, a report was written for the Club of Rome warning the world would run out of gold by 1981, mercury and silver by 1985, tin by 1987 and petroleum, copper, lead and natural gas by 1992. Gordon Taylor, in his 1970 book "The Doomsday Book," said Americans were using 50 percent of the world's resources and "by 2000 they [Americans] will, if permitted, be using all of them." In 1975, the Environmental Fund took out full-page ads warning, "The World as we know it will likely be ruined by the year 2000." Harvard University biologist George Wald in 1970 warned, "... civilization will end within 15 or 30 years unless immediate action is taken against problems facing mankind." That was the same year that Sen. Gaylord Nelson warned, in Look Magazine, that by 1995 "... somewhere between 75 and 85 percent of all the species of living animals will be extinct." It's not just latter-day doomsayers who have been wrong; doomsayers have always been wrong. In 1885, the U.S. Geological Survey announced there was "little or no chance" of oil being discovered in California, and a few years later they said the same about Kansas and Texas. In 1939, the U.S. Department of the Interior said American oil supplies would last only another 13 years. In 1949, the Secretary of the Interior said the end of U.S. oil supplies was in sight. Having learned nothing from its earlier erroneous claims, in 1974 the U.S. Geological Survey advised us that the U.S. had only a 10-year supply of natural gas. The fact of the matter, according to the American Gas Association, there's a 1,000 to 2,500 year supply. Here are my questions: In 1970, when environmentalists were making predictions of manmade global cooling and the threat of an ice age and millions of Americans starving to death, what kind of government policy should we have undertaken to prevent such a calamity? When Ehrlich predicted that England would not exist in the year 2000, what steps should the British Parliament have taken in 1970 to prevent such a dire outcome? In 1939, when the U.S. Department of the Interior warned that we only had oil supplies for another 13 years, what actions should President Roosevelt have taken? Finally, what makes us think that environmental alarmism is any more correct now that they have switched their tune to manmade global warming? Here are a few facts: Over 95 percent of the greenhouse effect is the result of water vapor in Earth's atmosphere. Without the greenhouse effect, Earth's average temperature would be zero degrees Fahrenheit. Most climate change is a result of the orbital eccentricities of Earth and variations in the sun's output. On top of that, natural wetlands produce more greenhouse gas contributions annually than all human sources combined. Obama's friend Bill Ayers stepping on American flag: Caution: You are about to enter a gun-free zone by Mike Adams link to original source I don’t have to remind my
readers that I spend a good bit of my time
disagreeing with campus leftists. Nor do I need to remind them that
most of these disagreements are with leftist professors. But, until
now, I haven’t written about one of the subjects upon which we
frequently disagree. That is the subject of whether deterrence theory
“works.”Conservatives and leftists (I have a hard time calling them liberals because of their fascistic tendencies) have a fundamentally different view of human nature. Leftists see humans as innately good. That is why they think rehabilitation works. It is also why they think the United Nations is a good idea. If people are innately good then, surely, they can talk out their problems without resorting to war. But conservatives have a more tragic view of human nature. We believe that people with innately destructive tendencies must be held in check. That is why we so frequently speak of traditional values. That is why we also speak of the need to have a punitive criminal justice system, which serves as a back-up plan when traditional values fail. The ideal system would mete out punishment that is swift, certain, and severe. In a nutshell, conservatives believe the Reagan military build-up produced the fall of the Berlin Wall. And we believe that criminals, like communists, are on their best behavior when they are afraid. Ever since I began my transformation from leftist atheist to conservative Christian I’ve been arguing with professors inclined to dismiss deterrence theory. Those professors usually fall into one of two groups. First, there are those who name a specific “get tough” program that they believe “hasn’t worked.” Second, there are those who just blandly assert that deterrence theory, in general, “doesn’t work.” Today, I plan to respond to both of these groups. Let me start with the second group. Every time I hear a professor say that deterrence theory “doesn’t work” I log on to his university web page to peruse his syllabi. And in each instance I find evidence that he really does believe in the efficacy of deterrence theory. That evidence comes in many forms such the assertion that “plagiarism will be punished under the academic honor code” or “those who miss more than two classes will have three points deducted from his or her final average.” Obviously, these professors seek to deter cheating and skipping class through the medium of punishment, not negotiation. That means the professors are hypocrites – not because they fail to live up to the things they say but because they do not even believe them in the first place. It is better to ignore these
hypocrites altogether. But those in the
aforementioned first group should be taken more seriously. Since they
tend to rely on specific empirical data rather than broad theoretical
assertions, I now invite them to participate in a little experiment
meant to assess whether specific measures based on deterrence theory
actually “work.”I want all of those leftist professors who say that having a gun in one’s home does not deter burglary to do the following: 1. Post a sign on your front door saying “Caution: You Are About to Enter a Gun Free Zone.” 2. Send a post card to DrAdams.org, P.O. Box 319, Wrightsville Beach, NC, 28480. Just note that you have posted your sign and leave a return address so I can mail you a crime victimization survey this time next year. Next, I want all of those gun owners who say that having a gun in one’s home does, in fact, deter burglary to do the following: 1. Post a sign on your front door saying “Caution: You Are About to Enter an Armed Household.” 2. Send a post card to DrAdams.org, P.O. Box 319, Wrightsville Beach, NC, 28480. Just note that you have posted your sign and leave a return address so I can mail you a crime victimization survey this time next year. There are also professors who continue to assert that actually carrying a weapon with a valid permit does not deter violent crime. For those, it will not be necessary to conduct a crime victimization study. There are already 15 refereed studies indicating that concealed carry permits reduce violent crime. While some published studies are inconclusive, none draw the conclusion that the permits increase violence. Nonetheless, some leftist professors continue to use scare tactics by ignoring the evidence and claiming that concealed carry permits do increase violence. Such assertions are immoral because they are dishonest. Such assertions are also careless because even those without guns are safer living in areas that allow citizens to carry concealed. This is because violent criminals do not know who has a gun and who does not. But, today, I plan to change all that by asking these leftists professors to write to DrAdams.org to re-assert their opposition to concealed carry laws. After they send a post card to the address supplied above, I’ll send them a free t-shirt saying “Caution: I’m an Un-Armed Citizen.” If they get into trouble wearing it, they can always negotiate their way out of the situation. |
